Strengthening Trust and Security in Cyberspace: A Visit by Assist. Prof. Dr. Dangis Rimkus from KTU
From November 4-7, 2024, Assist. Prof. Dr. Dangis Rimkus from the Applied Informatics Department at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) visited the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow, where he conducted classes on online security. His sessions were aimed at students pursuing studies in Public Relations and Journalism, offering essential insights into practical defenses against cyber threats, brand credibility online, and reputation protection.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Rimkus covered in detail topics related to balancing transparency with security and protecting against risks such as identity theft, phishing, malware, as well as more advanced fraud techniques like “quishing” (phishing using QR codes). Through specific case examples, he demonstrated how cyberattacks can lead to serious financial and reputational losses. The sessions also included manipulative techniques used by cybercriminals, such as time pressure and false alarm messages, which are particularly relevant for journalists and PR professionals.
Thanks to the professor’s guidance, participants learned how to strengthen passwords, secure mobile devices, and implement spam filters—practical measures that not only improve data security but also support efforts against cybercrime. Assist. Prof. Dr. Rimkus provided future specialists with essential tools for cyber defense and reputation management in the digital world, enhancing their skills to build trust and raise awareness of threats among their audiences.
We hope that this meeting will inspire students to implement strategies that increase online credibility and educate their audiences about fraud protection. The knowledge gained during these workshops will enable students to more effectively manage image and security in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
