New Humanism in the Era of Artificial Intelligence and Neuroscience - NHNAI 2024 Conference Summary
We invite you to read the results of the conference organised by our good partner - LUMSA University pt.: "Human Freedom at the test of AI and Neurosciences", as part of the New Humanism at the Time of Neurosciences and Artificial Intelligence (NHNAI 2024). The event was organised in collaboration with the Lyon Catholic University, ATEM - Association de Théologiennes et de Théologiens pour l'Étude de la Morale and University of Notre Dame Rome, under the auspices of the IFCU - International Federation of Catholic Universities.
How do developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and neuroscience affect our freedom and our understanding of humanity? These were the questions that experts from around the world sought to answer at the NHNAI (New Humanism at the Time of Neurosciences and Artificial Intelligence) conference, held from 2 to 5 September at the LUMSA University in Rome.
Technology and the limits of freedom
In an age where algorithms control our decisions and neurotechnologies interfere with our thought processes, a key question arises: are we still free subjects? The event discussed the benefits of AI in medicine and education, as well as the risks in terms of ethics, information manipulation and mental privacy.
Presentations from key experts
The conference brought together prominent experts, including:
- Dominique Lambert (University of Namur) – on the ethics of AI and issues such as mass surveillance and disinformation.
- Laura Palazzani (LUMSA University) – on the impact of AI on healthcare and the concept of 'neuro-rights'.
- Patricia Churchland (University of California, San Diego) – on the neurobiological basis of morality and the problem of free will.
- Fiorella Battaglia (University of Salento) – on the impact of AI on education and democracy.
Main conclusions
Parallel sessions addressed, among other things, the impact of AI on democracy, disinformation, education and ethics. The need to regulate technology and protect human autonomy in the digital age was highlighted.
Recordings of all presentations are available on the NHNAI YouTube channel.
